How to recognize a masochist

Would you know a masochist if you met them in a vanilla setting? Are there aspects to masochists that one can recoginize and say hmmmmmm must be? What have your experiences been like and have you been correct when thinking you've come across a masochists? Or as in my case everyone thinks the are a masochists until they play with me and then they realize that maybe the word masochists is not exactly the right word to describe them!
